In 1965, when their son Sean was 4 years old, Judy and Ron Barron were told that he was autistic. Having never heard the word before, they were given a hopeless vision of the future: nothing could be done about Sean's out of control behavior, and the behavior would get worse. By the time Sean reached puberty, he would need to be institutionalized. Nothing could be done about autism- autism was hopeless.
Despite this, Sean's parents continued going to specialists, following their advice with medications and behavior modifications, and asking questions. When none of the recommended treatments worked, they veered away from the 'experts' and followed their own instincts and judgement as parents and slowly began to reach Sean.
Now a college graduate, living independently, with a car, a full time job, and a full life, Sean and his mother have written the story of their journey as a family from diagnosis to living life. Told in alternating voices of mother and son, this is an inspiring portrayal of autism from two vantage points.
