Amici are grass-roots organizations of Americans with developmental disabilities, their families, friends, and professionals in the disability field.  Amici Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered and its affiliate "People First" organizations, are directed by people with disabilities, many of whom were once segregated in large state institutions.  For amici, the Americans with Disabilities Act has been a doorway to freedom, opportunity, and equal protection and citizenship under law.  Here is the brief of the Amici Curiae in the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Youth Services, Petitionsers, v.
