Welcome to the One-a-Day Hidden Curriculum Calendar designed by author Judy Endow, herself an adult on the spectrum, specifically with older adolescents and adults in mind. The "hidden currriculum" refers to those unstated rules or customs that, if not understood, can make the world a confusing place and make us feel isolated and "out of it." Most of us like rules if they are consistent. It is when they are unclear, are used inconsistently, or are unstated and merely implied that we become upset, confused, or even indignant. Some people seem to learn the hidden curriculum or aspects of it almost automatically, while others learn it only by direct instruction... if you or someone you know does not automatically absorb this information, here is an invitation to share "rules" others have learned.
"A tip a day... on how to understand all those unspoken rules that everyone else seems to know. Make it part of your daily routine." -Stephen Shore, Ed.D., assistant professor of Education, Adelphi University, and internationally known consultant and author on issues related to the autism spectrum.
